Chiefly letters from Tuttle to his wife, Anna, during his Civil War service as quartermaster with the 20th Indiana Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army of the Potomac. Tuttle provides detailed information concerning the results of battle gleaned primarily from wounded and returning soldiers. His letters also include observations on the conduct and competence of officers, camp life, behavior of women and African Americans among the troops, troop morale, and government bureaucracy. Tuttle's regiment was involved in the Peninsular campaign (1862); 2nd battle of Bull Run, Va., (1862); battle of Fredericksburg, Va., (1862); battle of Chancellorsville, Va., (1863); Gettysburg campaign (1863); maintenance of order in New York, N.Y, during draft riots (Aug.-Sept. 1863); operations along the Rapidan and Rappahannock rivers, Va., (1863); the advance towards Richmond, Va., including the battle of the Wilderness (1864), battle of the Spotsylvania Court House (1864), and Battle of Cold Harbor (1864); siege of Petersburg, Va., (1864-1865); and Appomattox campaign (1865).
